Ryna found solace in the quiet corners of her college library, seeking refuge from the storm of anxiety swirling within her. Each passing day seemed to bring new challenges, particularly in her ability to connect with her friends. The weight of her emotions grew heavier, like an unspoken cry echoing from the depths of her being. She longed for guidance, unsure of how to navigate the turbulent sea of her emotions.

As Ryna’s communication troubles persisted, the distance between her and her friends began to widen. She had always trusted them, seeking comfort in sharing the trials and tribulations of her family life. However, her vulnerability proved to be a double-edged sword. Whispers of her private struggles reached her ears, a painful reminder of the betrayal that can accompany opening up to others.

Ryna’s past was riddled with painful memories, a product of growing up with narcissistic parents. To her dismay, she still resided under their roof, subject to the relentless onslaught of physical, mental, and emotional trauma day in and day out. At times, the weight of her burdens became unbearable, and the thought of continuing to live seemed insurmountable. The damage inflicted upon her by her narcissistic parents had pushed her to the brink of survival, leaving her exhausted and desperate for respite. In her heart, she yearned for peace, healing, love, and the unwavering support she so desperately needed.

Narcissistic parenting is a characterized by a focus on the parent’s own needs and desires over the needs of the child. Identifying narcissistic parenting behaviors and traits can help you better understand the impact they may have on your life and how to cope with them.

As a matter of fact, children may not be able to identify what’s going wrong with them until they grow up. And guess what! It is when all the damages are already done! The child is grown up to an adult with damaged emotional and mental health. She is all alone in the bunch of people now that she is introduced to the outside world. People find her weird but the poor child (grown up now) doesn’t have any clue why the world is like this to her.

In the depths of Ryna’s troubled past, her parents remained oblivious to the realities she endured. The memories of her childhood, tainted by the horrific experience of molestation at the hands of her uncle, were locked away deep within her heart. Despite the weight of this burden, she knew that confiding in her parents would only lead to reproach and accusations of being “over smart.” The fear of their wrath, manifested through the very beatings she had grown accustomed to, forced her to swallow the bitter taste of that despicable encounter. It was clear that her parents lacked the empathetic understanding she so desperately sought, creating an unbridgeable chasm between them. The walls that stood tall between Ryna and her parents held her feelings captive, forever hidden from their unknowing eyes.

Narcissistic parents struggle to understand and validate their child’s feelings and experiences. They may prioritize their own needs over their child’s and minimize or dismiss their child’s emotions. This can lead to feelings of loneliness, sadness, and disconnection for the child.

This lack of empathy may persist in basics of life as well. Such parents often are seen neglecting their responsibilities towards the child. Even toddlers are neglected and are raised by external caregivers.

As Ryna continued to grow, her path remained intertwined with pain and suffering. The echoes of her troubled past reverberated through her present, leaving her trapped in a cycle of anguish. The heart-wrenching truth was that she had endured similar traumatic experiences throughout her childhood. The wounds inflicted by the world seemed to deepen with each passing year, leaving scars that whispered stories of unspeakable pain.

Just as she had faced molestation during her formative years, Ryna found herself burdened by the weight of silence. The knowledge that confiding in her parents would yield neither solace nor understanding was a heavy burden to bear. The fear of being labeled as “over smart” and the very real threat of physical punishment stifled her voice. Her parents’ lack of empathy remained a constant barrier, perpetuating a profound sense of isolation. In the depths of her being, she carried the untold stories of her suffering, locked away behind walls of unshared pain.

Within the confines of Ryna’s home, judgment hung heavy in the air, casting a shadow over her every move. Her parents held high expectations of her academic prowess, despite failing to provide the necessary resources to support her education. Basic necessities such as timely meals, books, and stationery were elusive, leaving her ill-equipped to thrive academically. The home itself was a battleground, the clashes of her parents reverberating through the walls, disrupting any semblance of a conducive study environment. Even something as simple as her mother packing her school lunch became an act of neglect, leaving Ryna to endure hunger and the gnawing pangs of an empty stomach during afternoon classes. The fear of her mother’s physical abuse kept her silent, trapping her in a cycle of deprivation and silence.

The weight of her parents’ societal reputation hung heavy on Ryna’s shoulders, a burden she carried with a heavy heart. Their standing in the community demanded excellence from their daughter, regardless of the toll it took on her well-being. The constant criticism, fueled by their desire for her to be the perfect girl, only served to further cripple her ability to study or find solace in play. Each failure, real or perceived, was met with disapproving glances and scathing remarks, exacerbating the very insecurities that hindered her progress. The weight of their expectations became a crushing force, suffocating Ryna’s spirit and stifling her potential for growth.

Narcissistic parents tend to be hyper-critical and judgmental, often using harsh or hurtful language to express their disapproval. They may be quick to point out their child’s flaws and mistakes, rather than offering support or encouragement. This can erode the child’s self-esteem and create a constant sense of anxiety and self-doubt.

Thus, the innocent mindset of the child is hampered. The natural flow of growth in child is hindered. The child experiences a great setback in his mental as well as emotional growth.

One afternoon, Ryna was resting. It was almost evening when her mother woke her up by shaking her. Her mother told her that it was early morning and she needed to go to school right away. Ryna found it hard to believe her mother because it looked like evening outside, and she had never seen so many people on the street during her walk to school.

Even though she was confused, Ryna decided to trust her mother and quickly changed into her school uniform. She headed towards school feeling lost and unsure. When she arrived, she was shocked to find that the school was closed. Ryna knew something was wrong. She returned home only to discover her mother laughing in a mean and cruel way.

Despite feeling hurt, Ryna realized that her mother was being selfish and enjoying playing tricks on her.

Gas lighting is a form of psychological manipulation in which the narcissistic parent tries to make their child doubt their own perceptions of reality. For example, they may deny that an event happened or tell their child that their memories are wrong. This can create confusion, self-doubt, and a sense of mistrust in the child. Thus, there grows a bunch of confused children out of such parenting. And on top of that, the parents show a bitter aggressive side of them when being confronted. This leads to more mental and emotional damage of the child, sometimes physical as well.

Ryna’s parent shared a disturbed relationship. They themselves were a narcissistic partner towards each other. At times when the bond was good, they would spend time with Ryna and her elder sister. They would tell them stories about their own childhood, talk about happy things in life and so on. But things weren’t like this forever. Ryna’s parent mostly fought with each other and the children were the one who suffered. Ryna’s mother would deny cooking at home because of her fight with her husband. Her father would come late, cook some and fed them. And then again the couple would indulge into fighting. Ryna and her sister could hear their fights and especially when they would talk about divorcing each other. This would make Ryna and her sister even more insecure and uncertain.

The behavior of narcissistic parents towards their children can be unpredictable and inconsistent, leaving the child feeling uncertain and insecure. These parents may display a pattern of extreme involvement and then sudden disengagement with their child. At times, they may shower their child with excessive attention, praise, and affection, only to suddenly withdraw or become distant without any explanation. Such inconsistent parenting can lead to confusion, anxiety, and a constant sense of unease for the child. They may never know what to expect from their parent, which can make it challenging for them to develop a stable and secure sense of self.

When a parent consistently places their own needs and desires above their child’s, it can create a toxic and damaging environment for the child. This is often the case with narcissistic parents who prioritize their own wants and desires over their child’s well-being. One of the ways this is manifested is through the parent’s inability to take responsibility for their mistakes. Instead of owning up to their errors, these parents frequently shift the blame onto their child or others, creating a harmful and manipulative dynamic that can take a serious toll on the child’s emotional health and development.

When Ryna had to shift from her hometown to another city for her further studies, she missed her friends and teachers. Her mother was there with her in the new city as well. Once Ryna wrote a letter to her best friend and expressed how much she misses her hometown and specially the teachers. Her mother found that letter, read it, and later made fun of Ryna about being “over-dramatic”. Ryna felt naked when her mother was reading out from the letter. There was a complete breach of trust for her. All she felt was that she has been made naked in public.

Lack of boundaries in the narcissistic parents may intrude on their child’s personal space and privacy, violating their boundaries and disregarding their needs. For example, they may read their child’s diary or eavesdrop on their conversations. This can create feelings of fear, shame, and embarrassment in the child.

Ryna always saw that her mother treated her older sister better. Her sister was kept safe from any harm or pain, and their mother always gave her sister things first before anyone else.

In families where one child is consistently favored over the others, the resulting dynamic can be fraught with tension, jealousy, and competition. This favoritism is often the case in households where one parent exhibits narcissistic tendencies and shows more attention and affection to one child than the others. This unequal treatment can create an atmosphere of hostility and resentment among siblings, as they vie for their parent’s approval and affection. Additionally, the favored child may be used as a pawn in their parent’s manipulative games, which can further exacerbate the divisions within the family.

These are some of the narcissistic parenting behaviors and traits present in Ryna’s story. It’s important to note that not all narcissistic parents exhibit the same behaviors, and the impact on children can vary.

At what age or stage of development can a child typically recognize or identify that their parent is exhibiting narcissistic behaviors?

Children may not be able to identify that a parent is narcissistic until they are older and have more life experience. However, some children may pick up on certain patterns of behavior that are consistent with narcissistic traits, such as feeling like they are not seen or heard by their parent, feeling like they are constantly walking on eggshells, or feeling like their parent’s needs always come before their own. Children may also notice that their parent is highly critical or demanding, and that their love and approval seems to be conditional on the child meeting their expectations.

Ryna is now in college and she can see how other children have been raised differently. Her classmates who come from loving families seem more energetic and mentally well. They know how to communicate effectively. However, Ryna’s ability to talk and express herself has been affected by her sad and hurt heart. Her heart has many emotional wounds, so whenever she meets someone new, she hopes they will be able to heal her. Ryna has developed a habit of expecting sympathy from everyone, and as a result, her friends have started to distance themselves from her.

It’s important to note that even if a child is not able to identify their parent’s narcissistic behavior; it can still have a profound impact on their emotional and psychological well-being. Narcissistic parenting can create feelings of insecurity, anxiety, and self-doubt, as well as a sense of disconnection from one’s own feelings and needs. If you suspect that you or someone you know is experiencing narcissistic parenting, it may be helpful to seek support from a therapist or counselor who can provide guidance and resources for coping with these challenges.

If you have a narcissistic parent, it’s important to prioritize your own well-being and seek support from a therapist or counselor. Remember, you deserve to be treated with respect and compassion, and there are resources available to help you navigate the challenges of narcissistic parenting.
